Due to different environmental and application conditions, the materials used for rubber seals vary, which determines the different environments and occasions for which the developed and produced seals are used.
In the industry, several common rubber seal materials used for developing and producing seals include NBR rubber seal materials, acrylate and fluororubber seal materials. Besides rubber, other seal materials that can be selected include silicone rubber seal materials, polyurethane, HNBR rubber materials, PTFE rubber seal materials (used for the lip part of seals), etc.


Food-grade rubber O-rings, simply put, are O-ring seals produced using food-grade rubber raw materials, primarily referring to their environmental performance. Materials generally used include NBR rubber, silicone rubber, EPDM rubber, natural rubber, neoprene rubber, fluororubber, etc. Typically, silicone rubber is the most commonly used. Food-grade silicone rubber is formed by the condensation polymerization of silicate inorganic polymer gel materials, with silicon dioxide as its main component, accounting for over 98%. It is non-toxic, odorless, chemically stable, and does not react with any acids, alkalis, or salts. Due to its colloidal structure, it has a large number of micropores and a high specific surface area. The pore size of edible silica gel is about 8 to 10 nanometers, with a specific surface area of 300-500 square meters per gram. It has strong water absorption capacity, and under high humidity conditions, its water absorption capacity can reach 8 to 10 times its own weight. Therefore, food-grade silica gel can be used as a desiccant for food and external products. Food-grade silicone rubber is a refined non-toxic product that can be directly mixed into food to ensure dryness and can be consumed with food without any adverse effects.

Main Applications of Food-Grade Rubber O-Rings:
1. Equipment connection pipelines, conduits, etc.; 
2. Baby bottle straws, conduits, etc.; 
3. Bread makers, sterilizers, water dispensers, kettles, irons, rice cookers, frying pans, juicers, gas appliances, and other mechanical products in the machinery, electrical, and electronics industries; 
4. Connection pipes for food machinery; pipe products for food applications; 
5. Connection pipes and conduits for water dispensers, coffee makers, children's sippy cups, etc.; 
6. Sealing for construction, transportation, electronic instruments, and components.


Main Performance Characteristics of Food-Grade Rubber O-Rings: 
1. Non-toxic, odorless, and highly environmentally friendly; 
2. Soft, elastic, resistant to twisting and deformation;

3. Crack-resistant, long service life, resistant to cold and high temperatures;

4. Higher tear strength and excellent electrical properties; 
5. Does not yellow, bloom, turn white, or fade when stored at room temperature; does not form scale or develop odors when immersed in water for extended periods.

Compared to other types of seals, rubber O-ring seals offer the following advantages:
1. Suitable for multiple sealing forms: static sealing, dynamic sealing;
Suitable for various applications, with standardized materials, sizes, and grooves, ensuring strong interchangeability.
2. Suitable for various motion types: rotational motion, axial reciprocating motion, or combined motion (e.g., rotational and reciprocating combined motion).
3. Suitable for various sealing media: oil, water, gas, chemical media, or other mixed media.
By selecting appropriate rubber materials and proper formulation design, effective sealing for oil, water, air, gas, and various chemical media can be achieved. Wide temperature range (-60°C to +220°C), with pressure resistance up to 1500 kg/cm² for static applications (when used with reinforcing rings).
4. Simple design, compact structure, easy installation and removal.
The cross-sectional structure of rubber O-ring seals is extremely simple and self-sealing, ensuring reliable sealing performance. Due to the simplicity of the O-ring itself and its installation structure, which is standardized, installation and replacement are very easy.
5. Low cost.
The selection of hardness for rubber O-ring seals is crucial. For example, a pump turbine at a power station using 70 (Shore) hardness seals often experienced peeling and even transverse cutting. After switching to 85–90 (Shore) hardness seals, the results were ideal.
Lower hardness facilitates installation but may lead to peeling, installation damage, extrusion, or pressure issues. Excessive hardness makes installation difficult.
Typically, rubber O-ring hardness ranges from 40 to 90 IRHD, but 70 IRHD is generally suitable for most applications. Silicone rubber is an exception, usually used at 60 IRHD.
6. Wide variety of materials.
Materials can be selected based on different fluids: NBR, fluororubber (FKM), silicone rubber (SIL), EPDM, neoprene rubber (CR), natural rubber (NR), HNBR, butyl rubber (IIR), fluorosilicone rubber (FLS), etc.
